Gallery Seven News - Term 2, week5

Bradley and Molly were our Kowhai Express stars this week. Bradley got his for working well with others and showing persistence  during dinosaur art time and Molly got hers for being experimental and  persistent in her exploration  of Kowhaiwhai patterns.

This week Harold giraffe and Bex visited us at school. We got to go into their big trailer and learn about the fact that we are all special. Harold sang us some funny songs and we saw a movie of him playing with his friends. We got to play with puppets and role played helping someone who was sad.

We have continued to explore kowhaiwhai patterns this week and we  been spotting them everywhere. Alicya found this picture in a dictionary, she thought they looked like korus, but they are actually part of a Rangoli pattern which are from India.

Thomas found Koru’s on his biscuit at read and feed time.
This week we added new materials to how we explored the Kowhaiwhai patterns, some of us used tablet paints which we mixed with water, this allowed us to blend and mix the colours like we were doing with the chalk pastels. Some children have created plans to make a sculpture using clay and have started work on these. On Thursday we read some Maori myths and legends, Gavin Bishop a NewZealand artist had done the illustrations. It looked like he had used, crayon and dye, the pictures were awesome so some of us are experimenting with that and using dye over the pastels.
We were on assembly with our buddy class, this week. We took our completed sculptures to the assembly, we were excited to hare them with everyone.
Emelia and Jasmine were our Artisans of the week. They both got their awards for Being experimental and resourceful in their exploration of  Kowhaiwhai patterns.
Some of their artwork on black paper is shown above.

This week we painted our Ankylosaurus sculpture the colours we chose last week . On Tuesday afternoon Mr and Mrs Cooks came in with some

e-monitors and took some film of us painting and doing other activities in the classroom. On Friday we finished painting him except for his eyes. We think he looks cool and we are looking forward to sharing him at next weeks assembly.
We  continued to explore kowhaiwhai patterns this week. We had a go at using chalk pastels and blending them, adding black outlines and adding white over the tops of other colours. We have been enjoying  working together on one artwork  and working on an artwork over a number of days. Some of us are wanting to explore these patterns using paint and some of us are wanting to make 3D kowhai.
Crystal did some great chalk art outside the other day, she drew a picture of the Earth and then on one side she drew the moon and on the other the sun, it was very well done.
During reading this week Quinn read a book about electricity this is, is a power station that he created after reading it, it had wind turbines and he could show how the power travelled around.
Noah and Zoe were our Artisans of the week. Noah got his for developing self-management skills and be an engaged and persistent reader, and Zoe got hers for being engaged and showing persistence in all areas of learning.

The Crystal Caves

As a writing task the children were asked to write a story describing the cave or their exploration of the cave in this picture, this is where their imaginations lead them.

I am exploring a cave and I can see some crystals, I can see some more rocks.
Noah

I ‘m in a cave made out of crystals.  There are bats.  The bat is black.  There are zombies in the cave.  The zombies eat snails and slugs and worms.  There are hundreds of zombies.
Ruben

I walked through the cave, it was like night but it was only lunch time.  Ice was dripping and falling on to the spiky rocks.  The reflection was deep as the sea and the rocks were as spiky as crystals.  Bats were flapping their wings.  I could see thousands of ice cubes.
Keira

I walked into the dark dark cave.  I saw bats hanging on the entrance.  On the other side there was fire.  I had rope and I tied a knot to a crystal in the middle of the cave.  The other side of the fire crystals fell on me.  I had a bandage.  I escape out of the back
entrance, back home.
Thomas

I  found a secret cave.  I was looking for treasure.  I couldn’t see, it was too dark.  I was swapping the treasure for the crystals.  I could see an amazing thing.
Bradley
I have a cave, on top it has snowflakes and crystals.  I love the snowflakes.  There are giant rocks and great big rocks.
Eve
I am exploring a crystal cave.  I found a crystal on the roof and it was white and blue.  I found my way out.
Jewels
I walked into a dark, dark cave, it was as dark as space.  Ice splashing into the water.  Bats were hanging.  I saw eyes on the walls and I heard creaking noises.  There were crystals on the ground, sparkling greens and blues.  The cave is like a different world that is made of crystals and ice.  But I have to find a way out, by digging a hole.
Jasmine
If I went in a cave I would see heaps of rocks and sharp icicles.  I would see deep water.  I think its in a cave.
Gabriella
If I was an explorer, I wouldn’t be scared because I am brave.  I saw a snake that was scary and that is when I got scared.
Zoe

I went in a cave I would see a boulder. I would see lots of sharp icicles. I would see water. It is blue and it is deep.
Kyla
I went in a cave with Lucia and it was very dark and it had snow flakes. I saw big rocks.  The shape of the rocks were circles, the colour was blue.
Shaun
We drove into a dark, dark cave. I heard bats flapping there wings. We were scared. I walked further. “No Shawn!” said mum as I walked further and further. I got more scared. Bats saw me they poked and they jabbed at me.
Shawn
The cave was dark.
Dion
I went through a dark tunnel. It was very dark and when I got out, I saw boulders. The boulders were brown and beside me. I saw lots of ice and I saw a shark, it was stuck to the ice.
Matt
I am in the cave.
I see sharks made of ice and a happy face.
Crystal
I am an explorer. I found crystals. The crystals were different colours. I polished the crystals. They were
beautiful.
Emelia
I found a cave and I made lots of things for it. I made a booby trap and I saw a spiky rock inside. A bird made a funny black rock thing on top of the cave.
Molly
I went through a dark tunnel and it was dark not dark, very, very dark. In the cave it has crystals. In the cave it has rocky rocks too.
Lucia

I was walking in the dark, dark cave,
icicles were smashing in the water and they were shining. The rocks were like meteors. When I was in there  I was wet and soggy, I did not have goggles. Then I saw bats and they were   black.   I was in a fire cave, it was like dinosaur cove. I could see blue and fire. I could not get out of the cave with icicles. I decided I would make a hole and get out.
Harriet
I walked into a dark, dark cave.
It was dark as space. Water was dripping, bats hanging and silent, ice mountains and spiky rocks sinking into the blue water. I just walked out of the cave, it was an amazing world, the ice was sharp as a knife. The world looked like the North Pole. It was winter that was turning into summer. I walked further then I saw crystals on the sharp floor. I picked up the crystals, I put them in a container. Then I saw a fire. I ran to the cave but there were bats sleeping. I ran to the hole at the side it lets you out. I had to wait until the fire was out from the water splashing up.
Quinn
I walked into a cave it was as dark as space. Icicles were crashing, crystals dropping on rocks that look like fire. I walked into a colourful world, it is awesome. It felt like monsters were tiptoeing behind me.  When
I was walking I heard water dropping and splashing. I heard bats chattering to each other. Now that I am in the cave I am going to look for treasure.
Alicya
I walked into a dark, dark cave, it was as dark as space. Shadow monsters and witches creeping with me. Icicles crashing! Smashing! I walk into a wonderful world that I can explore. I might find treasure because there are crystals and everything is shiny. I walked carefully because when the crystals fall on the gooey, ooey mud they get stuck. Years and years ago the mud got old and the mud splattered into the ground. The reason I walked carefully because the crystals were sharp. I got out my knife and I looked for sharp ends of crystals to collect and use as knives. I got a little bit tired, so I got my light out that was as bright as the sun. When I shone it, it lit up the room. I saw the exit. I ran and ran but almost fell down an enormous cliff. It was 10 metres high, so I had to put my yellow climbing belt on. Luckily there was a little hole in the rock beside me. So I hooked my belt on it. Then I jumped back off the rock. It felt like clip and climb. When I got to the very bottom, I saw my house. It would only take 5 minutes to get back. When I got back home, I smelt my favourite meal. It was Lasagne, Yum!
I woofed it up and then I brushed my disgusting teeth. Then I went to my comfortable bed.
Goodnight!
Ashtyn

Gallery Seven News - Term 2, Week 3

Eve and Gabriella were our Kowhai Express Stars this week. Eve got her award for being an engaged and self-managing learner and Gabriella got hers for being an engaged and persistent learner who strives for excellence.
This week we decided what colour we are going to paint Ankylosaurus. We all got to colour in an outline to show what colour we would like to see him painted. When they were finished we all got one sticker and placed it on the colour combination we liked best. We have decided that Ankylosaurus will be browns and black.

This week Shawn’s reading group read a book about pedals. In it was a picture of a very cool pedal car. When Shawn got home he made a model of the pedal car using Clikko. It looked very much like the one in the book.

Room 11 has been learning about flight and Mrs Hill brought some big lanterns that looked like little hot air balloons to fly. Mr Hill  helped light them and we watched them fill with hot air and rise.
We found this really cool leaf bug on someone as we came into class the other day. It kept hopping onto different people. It was quite small and bright green, we put it on a plant outside where it could camouflage itself.
We have been reading some Myth and Legends about where the Earth and people came from.  We read the story about Rangi and Papa and how Tane pushed them apart.  Thomas noticed that there were some cool Maori patterns in some of the pictures, these are called kowhaiwhai. Miss Bell drew some of them out for us and we practiced copying them on different shaped pieces of paper.  Later in the week we drew some patterns with chalk outside on the concrete we worked together adding shapes onto each others to make a big art work..
Harriet and Matt were our Artisans of the weeks. Matt got his for being an engaged and enthusiastic learner who gives everything a go and Harriet got hers for being an experimental learner who works well and enjoys working with others.

We had a very busy first week back and it was short because we remembered the ANZAC’s on Wednesday. It was book week this week and we had teachers from other classrooms come and visit us  and read stories it was really cool. On Friday we got to dress up as our favourite book characters we came as lots of different things.

We also started thinking about what makes someone beautiful.

Mr Morrall announced the winners for the
Express Train Ride and Jasmine has been picked to go on this adventure, we are proud of her.
