As I returned to class after lunch yesterday the children were looking at art books off the bookshelf and began discussing things they would like to make this year. They began discussing sculptures and the idea that they would like to make a dinosaur sculpture. At the end of the day Ashton asked he could bring along a remote control dinosaur that he had got for Christmas.
This is the discussion that developed from the dinosaur being at school.
Noah: How does it move?
Keira: There is stuff inside it that makes it walk. There is electricity in it from batteries.
Quinn: The neck moves heaps which makes the head move everywhere.
Bradley: Because the neck is soft when you push the button, the head moves around.
Thomas: Electricity it has batteries.
Shawn: It as a motor, it needs something to make the noise.
Noah: A speaker, the head moves because the head is made of rubber.
Ashton: It needs a controller and a wire and it goes all through it.
Shaun: The feet drag across the ground. The stuff from the tummy makes it move.
Ashton: It has tiny wheels.
D: It’s got wheels and the ground makes it move.
Ashton: The tail moves that makes it walk.
Bradley: We could draw the dinosaur.
Noah: We could get wood and carve it out.
Bradley: That might be too hard.
Keira: We could make a dinosaur out of cardboard.
Emelia: You could draw a picture of a dinosaur and we could colour it in and stuff it with paper.
Matt: The dinosaur moves because it has technology in it. I’m not sure what that is……. There are circuit boards in it.
Ashtyn: The neck moves which then makes the head turn.
Quinn: Do the head and feet move together.
Shawn: It makes noise because it has electricity in it.
The discussion followed with talking about what we would need to find out about dinosaurs in order to make one, so we are going to look for books on dinosaurs and do some exploring.
